On 11 June, a festival will be held in the former village of Lacoma near Cottbus to commemorate the years of resistance against the dredging of the village and the surrounding pond landscape by open-cast lignite mining.
From 1983 to 2007, Lacoma was a place of resistance against relocation and dredging, and from 1991 the annual Lacoma Festival was a central part of this protest culture. Situated on the outskirts of Cottbus, the temporarily occupied village repeatedly inspired the cultural and student scene of Lusatia.
The environmental group Cottbus as organizer expects not only a reunion with formerly committed activists, but also an exchange with young activists today. The Lacoma Festival 2022 takes up many traditions of the Lacoma festivals of that time. This time, there will also be a discussion forum, a reading, Sorbian culture, Gundermann songs and participatory dancing. The evening program will be performed by the band Lari and the break music as well as DJ Ida Bux from Upper Lusatia.
The Lacoma Festival 2022 takes place with the support of the Foundation for the Sorbian People, the Sonnencent promotion programme of Energiewerke Schönau and the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung.
